LANTA is excited to share the latest updates on our fare collection system, continuing our mission to improve accessibility and service for the Lehigh Valley. Over the past few years, we’ve been working to implement system-wide improvements, and now we are ready to unveil the next phase: ValleyRide.
A Simpler, More Efficient Fare Collection Process
At the heart of the system is a commitment to streamlining the way fares are collected and processed. With ValleyRide, we’re introducing a more efficient, user-friendly experience for both riders and operators. By simplifying the fare collection process, we’ll be able to reduce boarding times and improve overall efficiency, making the daily commute faster and more convenient.
What is ValleyRide?
ValleyRide is LANTA’s new all-encompassing fare collection platform, powered by Masabi, a leader in fare technology. After extensive research, including system tours and a competitive bidding process, we selected Masabi for their innovative and reliable solutions, and experience in the transit industry. ValleyRide will replace the current Token Transit mobile ticketing, integrating seamlessly with the Transit App, already in use across our services.
The new system will offer Account-Based Ticketing, which allows riders to create an account where funds can be loaded, and used for fare payments. This means that instead of worrying about carrying cash, funds can be loaded directly onto a ValleyRide account. Funds will be automatically deducted as you travel, offering a more convenient and flexible way to pay.
A Two-Phased Launch
The ValleyRide system will be rolled out in two phases, with the first phase launching in spring of next year. This gradual approach ensures that riders and staff have ample time to adjust to the new system while we transition away from the old fare collection methods.
New Features: Fare Capping, Account-Based Ticketing, and Loaded Value
A key component of ValleyRide is the introduction of fare capping, designed to promote social equity. Fare capping ensures that riders never pay more than the equivalent of a daily or monthly pass. Once you reach the fare cap, no additional charges will be made for the rest of the day or month, even as you continue to ride. This feature eliminates the need for upfront costs for passes, making transit more affordable and accessible for everyone.
With account-based ticketing, riders can manage their fares through a personal account where they can load value and track their travel history. This not only simplifies fare payments but also allows for greater flexibility, as riders can load funds as needed and never worry about losing tickets or running out of cash on the bus.
Why the Change?
This shift to ValleyRide reflects LANTA’s commitment to finding more reliable and equitable solutions for our riders. After conducting a fare study in 2022 and consulting with other transit agencies, we recognized the need for a modern, enhanced fare collection system. ValleyRide allows us to better serve our community by making transit easier, more affordable, and more in line with current trends in public transportation.
What’s Next?
More details will be shared as we get closer to the launch date in 2025. We are committed to keeping our riders informed every step of the way, with additional information on how ValleyRide will impact your daily commute, as well as training and resources for using the new system.
Stay Informed
For now, stay tuned for further updates on ValleyRide as we roll out more information over the coming months. LANTA is committed to making this transition as smooth as possible, and we look forward to bringing you a more equitable, efficient way to travel across the Lehigh Valley.
